I was so inspired by Abigail’s FO mosaic I wanted to have my own. So here it is , 37 objects fiinished in 2009.

Everything, except the two cardigans, were started in 2009. I started Breezy Cables (top row ) back in 2006 using some beautiful yarn that I bought from Harrisville, NH during our cross-country drive. I knitted it in a KAL with Jenny to keep me motivated so that I can finish it and wear it to Stitches West 2007. I ended-up knitting a sample Millicent sock for Cookie and ran out of time. With a little encouragement in the beginning of Summer 2009, from Margit, I finished the cardigan by the end of Summer.
That left the the Fall to finish a couple of Cardigan for Arwen sweaters that Margit and I started in our two-person but infrequent KAL in 2007. Now that Breezy Cables was done, the plan was to work on Arwen once a week at lunchtime and again at BobaKnit so that they will be done by Halloween, allowing us to greet trick or treaters in our elfin garb. Margit finished hers a few days ahead of schedule and I finished mine on Halloween.
As long as I can remember, I’ve always want to weave. I made a scarf(lower right), a table runner(lower left), and a placemat(center right) with my rigid heddle loom. Last year, I read everything I can about weaving. The vocabulary, the equipment, the yarn was all foreign to me. After a year of reading books and several issues of Handwoven I can read a draft and can read through an article without looking up a word. Maybe 2010 is the year I get into weaving with a 4 harness loom! Or, I can spend a little more time exploring the intricacies of rigid heddle weaving.

Finished armhole edging with ribbing which gives it more flexibility. This is knitted from bottom up then splitting at the armhole to finish the backs and the 2 front sides.
I always have trouble with the buttonholes. They seem to get stretched with use and should be made a tat smaller than originally planned.

I’ve been wanting to make a Baby Surprise Jacket for a long time and I found some yarn that was perfect for it!

Yarn: Loops and Threads Impeccable Ombre – Fresh Lilac and Vanna’s Choice – Dusty Purple
Needles: US Size 6
I gave it to 14 month old Akemi, who just happens to be the perfect size for it!

Last week I knitted a baby sweater from Fiber Fiend’s new and soon to be available baby sweater pattern, Trees. Here’s Emmett modeling it for me just minutes before the sun went down yesterday.

The construction is easy and the Fair-Isle tree pattern is really fun to knit.

I even found some acorn buttons to complete the whole Hug A Tree, Hug A Baby look!
Pattern: Trees by Fiber Fiend
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease in Lake and Taupe
Needles: Size 5 for the ribbing and Size 8 for the body.
Size: 6-12 months.

I don’t really plan my projects in any particular way. But after a long journey, Ron’s Bowie sweater is done!

Early this year, I got the idea that I wanted to knit a vest for Ron. I bought some gray Cascade 220 at a sale at Purlescence. A few months later, I bought the Bowie pattern ( which was not a vest but a pullover sweater), and went back for more yarn. Finally, in March, I casted on and quickly knitted the back and half of a sleeve. By mid April, the weather started warming up and the sweater went into hibernation.

When the weather started cooling off, I started working on the sweater again. After a while I realized I was going to run out of yarn. So it’s back to Purlescence for one more hank of yarn. The knitting went pretty quickly once I figured out all my notes and had all the yarn that I needed. And before I knew it, the knitting was done!

Unlike my first sweater which was knit all in one piece and involved no sewing at all, this one had four pieces. After what seemed like eons of sewing, I’m done. It fits him perfectly and is keeping him warm, now that it’s sweater time in California.
Pattern: Bowie
Yarn: 750 grams of gray Cascade 220 color 8400
Needles: #3 US and #6 US
Size: 40
Modifications: 3 needle bind-off on shoulder
Started: Sometime in March 2007
Finished: November 10, 2007

I’m now a grandmother of Nee’s assessory dog, Sweetie Godzilla Princess Moahnee Stinky Choy (name changes each blog) and she was visiting after a bit of a scare. She must’ve eaten something really bad and was acting disoriented and wobbly and wouldn’t eat or drink. We almost had to go to the 24 hour very expensive hospital, but waited. She’s fine now after a big bill for xrays, blood work, sedation and xrays. Everything, except loose bowels — yuck …which explains why she’s convalescing at OUR home, not with the other Princess.
So we had a low key day of knitting with grandma in the backyard on a somewhat blustery day. At one point, she sat on my lap and had the strand of yarn go through her mouth before it got to the knitting needle. Had to put a stop to that little trick quick. “Grandpa” was cooking on the grill and came home early to make sure Sweetie was ok.

I rumaged through my bags of stuff from our Maine trip in April and lo and behold found a kit we purchased in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at a very cute yarn shop, The Yarn Basket on Ladd Street (yarns you yearn for). The lady was so nice and the place was small and cozy, jammed to the ceiling with great looking yarn of many different variety. Examples of very creative and beautiful scarves, sweaters, capes, ponchos, bags, scrugs, you name it, were literally piled on top of each other in this shop. The owner’s name was also Elaine and I felt it was God’s will that we linger and stay there to touch, shop, look, dream, touch some more and ooo and ahhhh.

Well, Pauline and I ditched our spouses and children and stayed there for quite awhile and bought stuff that we forgot about till now. The kit was 2 balls of yarn – MY (Muench Yarns) – Tessin (made in Germany and imported by Muench Yarns Inc of (where else) Petaluma, California (yeah, right next door practically), a pattern and 2 very cute sheep buttons. There is no finished product picture, so we’re going by memory and pattern alone. I think the finished product was a baby striped sweater with a yoke flap in front that buttons on either side of the baby’s chest under the chubby cheeks. We will soon find out. A #10 needle is called for.

This blanket was the finished product for Theresa and Glenn who’s journey to this point of having #2 is nothing short of a miracle. We are still, by faith, anticipating the arrival early next year of their special baby. I used Baby Cloud yarn, #10 again and the 4 square pattern.

The finished pink and green square blanket for Cortney and Kyle’s #1 on the way — shower is this Saturday.

The turquoisey blue part of this diagonal square was yarn bought at Portland, Maine on sale, and since I didn’t plan very well, I ran out of this yarn but found something similar with a lighter blue. This yarn has a mohairy feel to it and I double up with another yarn to mute the turquoise so that it’ll have more of a baby-ish look. This finished baby blanket will be going to Kim and George for their #2 baby, a boy due this year. In Riverside, they don’t need too thick of a blankety, so this should be a good throw for them to use. Big sister Samantha is about 2 years old and has the same birthday as my Princess Nee.
***********************************************************************
There is a flurry of knitting during this time of the year, the hottest time of the year, of course, because the rest of the year is devoted to my wonderful first graders. If I had my druthers, I’d be knitting for them. They all need at least a scarf to wear for those 2 – 3 days of real chill in California and their snow trips to Tahoe.

It’s warming up here in California. I’ve finished the Oz vest for the cool evenings walks.

Or maybe a night game at AT&T park…

Or… Just hanging around being cute …

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease Yarn
Needles: Size 8 US
Pattern: Oz from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms
Since the pattern called for sport weight yarn and the Cotton Ease is worsted weight, I modified the pattern to accommodate the larger gauge. I casted on 45 stitches for the front and the back and followed the shaping instructions for the the newborn size but followed the measurements for the 6 months size. There’s supposed to be buttons on the left shoulder but I left them out since the v-neck opening provided ample clearance for the baby’s head.

These PPBB ( Pom Pom Baby Booties ) went to Todd & Kim’s brand new baby girl. They were also the recipients of PPBB #9 back in the days when they didn’t know the gender of their expected baby.

So, finally we know, it’s a cute little girl and she needs some pink booties!

Yarn: Lion Brand Babysoft Yarn
Needles: size 7 DP INOX
Pattern: It started out as Girls Booties from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms, by Louisa Harding, but I modified the sole so that it is flatter(so I can pose them for pictures?) I put in fewer lazy daisies (because I’m lazy?) and added pom-poms, so that they can be #10 of the PPBB series.
I started OZ Vest from the same book, using Lionbrand Cotton Ease. Baby clothes are so quick to knit!

I actually finished this poncho back in January but I just got around to weaving in the ends and giving it to Justin. I made the neck extra stretchy and the hood extra large… just in case…

Here’s the back. The lighter section was continued from the front and the blue section was knitted from the bottom up on the back. The two sections were grafted together with the Kitchener stitch. (I wanted to stay in practice).

Needles: size 8 bamboo straights and circulars
Yarn: Lion Brand Jiffy
Pattern: Adapted from Lion Brand Hooded Baby Poncho

I may, or may not finish my sweater by the last day of Stitches West, but who cares?? I think I was in yarn heaven at the Market Preview yesterday.
My favorite booth, of course, was the Bay Area Knit Co-op booth #732, run by Cookie A. and Lynn Curry.
Here are some of the samples of the brand new sock patterns that Cookie wrote. I had the pleasure of knitting the Millicent sample ( the red one in the back) with an intricate lacy cuff, ribbed leg, and an asymmetrical ribbing design on the instep. It’s a brand new pattern, seen for the first time here!

Here’s the booth just minutes before the Market Preview opened. There’s Margit’s Fiber Fiend rack standing tall in the corner full of her yummy hand-dyed fibers!

Here are samples of Cookie’s socks that have been published in Knitty.

Here are more of her famous socks.

The market opens and shoppers come rushing in grabbing all kinds of goodies. A long line forms at the Blue Moon booth.

Here’s Kristi, Lynn, and Cookie processing sales as quickly as they can.

Kristi’s Avery baby sweater is so adorable. The pattern has a picture of a baby modeling it. So cute!

I couldn’t pass up these knitting needles at the Yarn Dog booth.

I bought a pair of size 10 needles with sheep knobs! I found some buttons at the Buttons! booth that were just perfect for my new cardigan.

I spent about 15 minutes at the Machine Knitters Guild learning how to machine knit, increasing, decreasing, and casting off. It was so much fun. I’m really tempted to get a knitting machine now. I think I have enough room for a loom and a knitting machine in my “yarn room” if I don’t mind not having much floor space to walk around in, but who needs to walk around in a yarn room. Here’s the swatch I made!

That was just the first day of Stitches!
