Finished Objects for 2009

Posted in accessories, baby stuff, booties, hats, lace, mittens and gloves, scarves, shawls, stoles, and wraps, socks, sweaters, toys at 2:05 am by pauline

I was so inspired by Abigail’s FO mosaic I wanted to have my own. So here it is , 37 objects fiinished in 2009.

2009FOsm

Everything, except the two cardigans, were started in 2009. I started  Breezy Cables (top row ) back in 2006  using some beautiful yarn that I bought from Harrisville, NH during our cross-country drive. I knitted it in a KAL with Jenny to keep me motivated so that I can finish it and wear it to Stitches West 2007. I ended-up knitting a sample Millicent sock for Cookie and ran out of time. With a little encouragement in the beginning of Summer 2009,  from Margit, I finished the cardigan by the end of Summer.

That left the the Fall to finish a couple of  Cardigan for Arwen sweaters that Margit and I started in our two-person but infrequent KAL in 2007. Now that Breezy Cables was done, the plan was to work on Arwen once a week at lunchtime and again at BobaKnit so that they will be done by Halloween, allowing us to greet trick or treaters in our elfin garb. Margit finished hers a few days ahead of schedule and I finished mine on Halloween.

As long as I can remember, I’ve always want to weave. I made a scarf(lower right), a table runner(lower left), and a placemat(center right) with my rigid heddle loom. Last year, I read everything I can about weaving. The vocabulary, the equipment, the yarn was all foreign to me.  After a year of reading books and several issues of Handwoven I can read a draft and can read through an article without looking up a word. Maybe 2010 is the year I get into weaving with a 4 harness loom! Or, I can spend a little more time exploring the intricacies of rigid heddle weaving.

Easter Cap

Posted in Jenny, hats at 9:36 pm by pauline

Jerry’s new chemo cap fits him perfectly. Here he is, with Regina, playing with their grandson at the OVCC Easter Luncheon. The hat was knit by Jenny using the A Family Affair pattern from Knit One Below. Her adaptation using two solid color yarns created an intriguing yet manly design for an Easter cap!

Here I am with Jenny. Happy Easter everyone!

“Knit One Below” Hat

Knit One Below Hat

Knit One Below Hat

It took me awhile to figure how this “Knit One Below” technique works. I had to rip this hat out 3 times before I got the hang of it.  I am not like PWW, who is an expert & can whip out a project in no time. I never follow the pattern exactly because my gauge is always different from what was stated in the pattern and I did not use five colors of yarn.  I hope it fits.

Tweed Stitch Hat

Posted in Jenny, Uncategorized, hats at 2:47 pm by Jenny

I made this hat for a relative who is going thru chemo for breast cancer using the tweed stitch.

Pattern: multiple of 4 (using a circular needle) I knit tight so I CO 88 sts with a size 9 needle. I did a ribbing for about 1 1/2″ then continue with the following:

Tweed Stitch Hat

Tweed Stitch Hat

Round 1: *K1, yfwd,sl 1 purlwise, ybk; repeat from * to end of rd. Round 2: Knit [if using straight needle, purl this row]  Round 3: *Yfwd, sl 1 purlwise, ybk, k1; repeat from * to end of rd. Round 4: Knit [purl if using straight needles]

Repeat these four rounds til desired length (about 5-6″).  Decrease on the knit rd, work even the next round. Continue to decrease til there are 8 or 10 stitches left, cut yarn & pull thru remaining sts to secure tightly.

The Hat Stayed On Today

Posted in FO sightings, accessories, baby stuff, hats, yarn at 4:10 am by pauline

Last December I made my grandson a Turn A Square hat but every time it was placed on his head, he would rip it right off. A few days ago, for some unknown reason, he decided that it is now OK to wear a hat.

Here he is at the zoo with his hat to keep his sweet head warm!

Something to keep in mind: Knitting hats for a toddler can be a risky proposition. They may or may not ever be worn. But if they ever do wear them, it makes it all worthwhile! Sigh…

Pattern: Turn A Square by Jared Flood

Size: scaled down to toddler size – 15 inches in diameter and 7 inches tall.

Yarn: I didn’t have any worsted self striping yarn so I used three different colors of Knitpicks Swish Worsted – black, gray, and squirrel

Needles: US size 6 circular.

When the dinosaurs roamed the earth

Emmett is growing so fast! He’s outgrowing his hats. Nate showed me a picture of a Stegosaurus hat that someone was selling on ebay. I took some measurements of Emmett’s head, looked through my stash, and voila!

Here’s the view from the front

and from the side.

At last, he’s here to try it on. (minutes after he arrived and seconds after his dad put a cuties tangerine sticker on his cheek)

Pattern: Baby Stegosaurus Hat – by me (I’ll write it up soon)

Yarn: Some worsted weight from my stash

Gauge: 17 sts = 4 ”

Needles: sz 8

Cast on: 72 sts

Measurements: 16.5″ (unstretch) circumference and 6″ tall.

Emmett’s Apple Hat

Posted in FO sightings, accessories, baby stuff, hats at 12:17 am by pauline

I’d like to introduce my grandson Emmett! He was born last month and is one of the main reasons why posts have been so scarce lately. My son & daughter-in-law are doing just great. Ron & I being the proud first-time grandparents that we are have seen this new family at least once a week since Emmett was born! He’s starting to chub out now and wearing his grandma handknits proudly.

I’ve designed and knitted a hat for him to wear to the local produce market with his “Tai Paw” (great-grandma) on Saturdays. It is made from left-over STR medium-weight Monsoon colorway from the 2007 Sock Club.

Here’s the pattern:

Size: newborn to 3 months

Yarn: About 25 grams of STR medium weight sock yarn or any medium weight sock yarn
Needles: US 3 circular needles or whatever needles that are required to obtain the gauge
Gauge: 4″-25 stitches & 4″ – 35 rows

Dimensions (unstretched) 6.5″ accross, 13″ circumference, 5″ height

Ribbing:

Cast on 80 stitches loosely

Join being careful not to twist.

Rnd 1: [K2 P2] repeat to end of round

Repeat Rnd 1 – 8 times

Body of hat:

Knit in the round until the hat measures 3.25″ from the cast on.

Crown Shaping:

Rnd 1 [ k8 k2tog] repeat to end of round – 72 sts
Rnd 2 k
Rnd 3 [k7 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 64 sts
Rnd 4 K
Rnd 5 [k6 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 56 sts
Rnd 6 K
Rnd 7 [k5 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 48 sts
Rnd 8 [k4 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 40 sts
Rnd 11 [k3 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 32 sts
Rnd 12 [k2 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 24 sts
Rnd 13 [k1 K2tog] repeat to end of round – 16 sts
Rnd 14 K2tog repeat to end of round – 8 sts
Rnd 15 K2Tog repeat to end of round – 4 sts

Stem:

Make a 2″ I-cord from the remaining 4 stitches. Cut yarn leaving a 4″ tail. Draw up remaining stitches tightly on the end of the yarn through the center of the stem and weave end of yarn inside the hat.

Leaf:

Cast on 3 sts

Row 1 P
Row 2 K1, inc 1, K1, inc 1 K1 – 5 stitches
Row 3 P
Row 4 K1, inc 1, K3, inc 1 K1 – 7 stitches
Row 5 P
Row 6 K1, inc 1, K5, inc 1 K1 – 9 stitches
Row 7 P
Row 8 K
Row 9 SSK P5 K2tog – 7 stitches
Row 10 P2tog K3 P2tog thru back loops – 5 stitches
Row 11 SSK P1 K2Tog – 3 stitches
Make 1/2 ” long I cord from the remaining 3 stitches

Cut yarn leaving a 3″ tail. Draw up remaining stitches tightly.

Use tail to sew the leaf onto the base of the stem.

Weave in ends.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame!

Posted in BobaKnit, Uncategorized, hats at 1:06 pm by pauline

After almost a year, I finally made it out to the ballpark again. With Barry’s race towards his record breaking homerun, and the Second Annual Stitch N Pitch Night, who can resist? Ron & Nate came with me to the game and they let me keep their goody bags.

I was always skeptical of people who said they can knit at a ball game so I thought I’d try it myself since I had so much company.

I did 3 rounds of my Monkey sock and decided that the stitches were too small and too dark to be doing in a situation where I’m supposed to keep your eye on the ball. So, I switched over to the bulky yarn spiral rib hat. Doing bulky projects from time to time gives me a sense of accomplishment since everything goes so fast and I can knit on for minutes at a time without looking down at my work.

The Giants went scoreless until 2 outs at the bottom of 9th when they tied the game went on to extra innings(more knitting time for me). We finally left at the top of the 13th inning when they fell behind 6-4. Listening to radio, on the way home, they were still playing the bottom of the 13th and finally lost 7-5.

I’m so glad we didn’t get shut out and watching all those last minute rallies were great fun. The downside is that I would put away my knitting whenever the Giants were up just to find myself taking it out again when inning’s over and the game is still tied.
Here is a picture of some of the items that came with the Stitch N Pitch goody bag and the progress I made on my hat.

Although they were several rows away, I saw many of my BobaKnit and LYS friends and their families. There were happy husbands, kids, & friends of knitters seated with the knitters cheering on our team. After 12 and a half innings I concluded that it is possible to knit at a ballgame AND if more families can do what the Stitch N Pitch families did last night, the world would be a better place.

The I’m A Girl Hat

Posted in baby stuff, hats at 2:32 pm by pauline

This baby hat is for mothers who are sick of telling people that their baby is a girl, inspite of the lacy bottoms, and floral onesies!!This hat says “I’m a girl! Get it?? PINK!! Picot edging!!! Bobbles!! EYELETS!!! EQUALS : I’M A GIRL!!!!”

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease

Pattern: Pretty much the same elements as the Last Minute Gift (see previous entry) except I casted on 60 stitches and did some decreases along the way and topped the whole thing off with bobbles!!!!

Mohair Beret

Posted in hats at 2:09 pm by pauline

After work one evening last November, I went to Purlescence with my grand opening coupon and came home with this luscious hank of Blue Moon Kidmo, in the Carbon Dating colorway:

I flipped through my patterns found the perfect beret pattern in the winter 2006 Interweave Knits. After a little bit of playing and swatching, I casted it on my #9 clover circulars.

It was soft and fuzzy and fun to work with. But I soon got distracted by other projects and it joined the ranks of the UFOs.

Last week I took it out, finished it. I was able to get on my freakishly large head so it would probably fit a normal head just fine. It’s now in its new home in Tacoma with Joan… One less UFO!!!YAY!!!
