My S.I.T.S.O.L. KAL socks are done, on time, and with a few hours to spare! Oh what fun it was.

In just a few minutes, the next sock will be revealed. It involves ragg yarn & beads. I think I’ll take a look at the pattern first and then go shopping. There seems to be quite a few knitters out there w/ their yarn & beads ready to go!

Switchy Swatchy

I started these Six Sox Knitalong “Standing in the Shadow of Love” socks (by Adrienne Fong) on Jan 14 on 2 size 2 Susan Bates Circulars with Knit Picks Essential Dusk(blue) & Fawn(beige) sock yarn. About about 1/2 way through the cuff I switched to one pair of 32 inch Addi Turbo #2 circulars which I bought at Commuknity.

Then I learned a few things about metric vs US needle sizes and the importance of swatching. US #2 needles are 2.75mm and the Addi Turbo #2’s are 3.0mm. About a couple of rows after the hearts started appearing I realized that the gauge was too big so I switched back to the Susan Bates. I missed the smooth Addi Turbo action but the Susan Bates weren’t too bad – usually the last stitch on the left will get jambed when I turn and slide & the stitches off the cable and onto the needle (one thing the Addi Turbos never had a problem with). At that point I looked on ebay for some Addi Turbo #1’s(2.5mm) but ended up buying them at Uncommon Threads in Los Altos, on my way to the Tapioca Express knitting group. That night I transferred the socks to the Addi Turbo’s #1. By then the socks had been worked to the bottom border of the leg. Fortunately, the bulging and narrowing (see picture) worked out well for leg shaping.

It was a challenge keeping the yarn untangled during the 2 color leg portion. There was 2 skeins of dusk for each sock and one skein of fawn which I knit from both ends. I found that untangling every few rows helped keep things under control.

Before I started the heel flaps, I knit an extra 1/2 a round on one of the socks so that the “jog” resulting from the yarn changes would be inside of both legs rather on than on the left or right of both legs. I tried doing the “jogless join” between colors but it didn’t work w/ the purling.

The heel and gusset went fairly easily and here I am now at the beginning of the foot portion of the sock with only 107 hours to the deadline!!!!

Pomatomus Socks
I finished Pomatomus on January 12, 2006. I started them on December 17, 2005. They are pretty to look at and comfortable to wear.

I really learned a lot about using lace patterns in socks and how to knit socks on circular needles!

Noro Silk Garden – A Beautiful Yarn

Posted in yarn at 9:42 pm by pwhawk

I bought 2 skeins of Noro Silk Garden last week from Comunknity and couldn’t wait to do something w/ it! I started a scarf. It sure goes a lot faster than the socks do!!! #8 needles might have something to do w/ it. The yarn is so beautiful!

Pomatomus Progress – My first real socks

Posted in socks at 1:47 am by pwhawk

I started my Pomatomus socks on December 17, 2005. I am making two at once on two size 2 circulars. The yarn is KnitPick’s Dancing Sock yarn. I finished the gusset tonight. It’s now on with the foot.

These are my first “real” socks. All of my previous pairs have been with pretty big needles and big yarn.
