Sarcelle Shawl

Posted in Uncategorized, shawls, stoles, and wraps at 11:44 am by pauline

I was so intrigued by Kristi’s Sarcelle pattern. I started it last night and it is turning out beautifully.
First few rows of my Sarcelle

It starts in the corner and eventually looks like Kristi’s

I have a long way to go but it should be fun.

RPM – Really Spacy Socks

Posted in socks at 1:03 am by pauline

IMG_1442.JPG

I finished these socks a few days ago. They are probably the spaciest socks I ever made. The spirals, the spots, the bands of color… they belong on Futurama!

Here’s Katie modeling them. The opposing spirals were inspired by Cookie. Ron is bringing them to Elaine on Monday so that she can wear them for yard duty.

Jogless Reverse Winding RPM Socks

Posted in socks at 12:35 pm by pauline

IMG_1400.JPG

After I finished the first RPM (Knitty Summer 2006), I figured out that I could have avoided the jog all together if I had just casted on one stitch less, or one less than some multiple of 9. It would have made the counting pretty mindless too: *p3 k6* until you’re done spiraling around the leg!

By adding a stitch to the multiple of 9, the revolutions will go the other way. This is fine unless you want to have one sock wind one way and the other sock wind the other way! The problem is that one sock will have 2 stitches in circumference more than the other.

My solution for jogless opposite winding RPM socks:

Cast on the recommended number (multiple of 9) of stitches for both socks (yay! matching socks). To wind the purl bumps leftward, as in the completed sock on the right, put in one run of K’s with 7 stitches instead of 6. And to wind the purl bumps rightward, as in the other sock, put in one run of K’s with 5 stitches. The counting isn’t as mindless but you can put a marker on the where the longer(or shorter) run of K’s are.

I’m about 1/2 way done with the heel decreases on the 2nd sock now. I did the 2nd sock with the purl bumps winding to the right using the method described above. Can you spot the 5 stitch run of K’s? This pattern is simple enough to knit while watching television yet interesting enough to keep my short attention span.

Progress on Ernie’s Sweater

Posted in baby stuff, sweaters, toys at 11:33 am by pauline

The body of Ernie’s sweater is done. Here he is modeling it. I need to add buttons and a hood.

Here’s the front

And back

This has got to be the cutest sweater I ever made. There really is no point in writing down the pattern since no one else is sized and shaped like him and it’s unlikely I ‘ll need to make another sweater like this for him.

Ernie Sweater & Scales Skin Socks

Posted in socks, sweaters, toys at 1:21 pm by pauline

I think I enjoy playing with needles, yarn, and patterns more than actually completing something. So, I started two new projects in the last two days.

New Start #1 – ERNIE’s sweater:

ernie1

Yarn: Cascade Quatro 100% Peruvian wool

Needles: Clover #6 circulars
Pattern: I’m knitting it to fit Ernie* as I go. So far, I’ve been knitting it like the 5 hour sweater except I substuted rows 8,9,12,13 w/ K across. When I get to his shoulders, I’ll split it into sleeves, back, & fronts.
*Ernie is Katie’s plush Sesame Street doll who’s been falling apart for years

New Start #2 – Scales Skin Socks

This is for my August/Sept Six Socks Knit Along.

scale socks

Yarn: Lion Brand Baby Soft “Carousel”( discontinued) 100% acrylic
Needles: Susan Bates US#1 (2.25mm) double pointed needles. I’ve knitted my last 10 pairs of socks using circular needles but I see some advantages going w/ DP’s. There is less fiddling wth and sliding of stitches stitches and the stitches don’t strain as much between needles (120 degrees vs 180 degrees transitions — my nerdy comment). I don’t know if it translates to more speed or not. Picking up the stiches along the heel flaps is also amazingly easiliy when you have alll those needles to work with. The major disadvantage is that it is harder to try the sock on as you are knitting. The stitches have to be transferred to circulars before that could be done, particularly while knitting in the leg and heel areas. Another consideration is the lack of portability. You much more likely to drop stitches in transport and drop needles while knitting w/ DP’s than you would with circulars.

Hiding Yarn

Posted in Elaine, Uncategorized, mrseknstitch at 7:25 pm by mrseknstitch

Whenever Pauline has a day off, and I’m not working, we try to have a “DWWDWP” which stands for “do whatever we…….” Activities are varied but always include some kind of knitting theme. Before I left for my jaunt to Shanghai, we were on such an outing on a Friday, thinking that I would be leaving the following Tuesday. We looked for potential knitting projects to bring safely onto the plane, etc. and had a wonderful time even though my gout was on the mend and had the wonderful side effects of the meds. That evening our other sister, Doreen called and told me that we were going to move the trip up to Sunday for take off. I dumbfoundedly agreed and off we went to Shanghai. Upon return, I was a major jet lag victim, but because Pauline had a Friday off, we went out and spent money on yarn, looked for sales on yarn, went up to Stoneridge and bought Origins stuff and came home. I totally forgot about the bag of yarn and back to school goodies I had purchased 2 weeks before when we had a DWWDWP day. So the challenge is great these next few days to alleviate the guilt of purchased yarn and forgetting what we had intended it for. It was intended for good and cute, I’m sure, but getting old is the pits – can you imagine how much we could accomplish if were energetic 7 year olds? mrsekc still jetlagging (planning to use this excuse for the rest of the year) P.S. I finished the scarf – turquoise surprise for Doreen immediately while riding up to Napa to see Joanie.
