My mother-in-law made booties very similar to these 30 years ago and told me then that they were the only booties that were guaranteed not to fall off! She said they were based on a pattern she got from a neighbor years ago Fargo. The neighbor got it from some Scandinavian relative. Since then, my mother-in-law made hundreds of these booties and never worked off a pattern.
I found several patterns on the internet but they never came out right because either the gauge was wrong or too many details were left out. After a lot of trial and error, I finally came out with one that can be knit on circular needles with 2 colors of yarn. These are very quick to knit but requires a few intermediate level knitting skills.
Materials:
Size 5 US circular needles.
Yarn Color A: 50gr variegated baby yarn
Yarn Color B: 50gr solid color baby yarn
Uslng color A cast on 11sts.

Row 1.slip as lf to purl YO k. 10

Row 2 -Row 36 repeat row 1.

At the end of row 36 switch to color B by breaking off color A leaving a 2 inch tail or enough to weave in later Leaving a loop in the cable, pick up 18 st on long side and pick up 10 stitches along the short side. Leave another loop inthe needle and then pick up17 stitches on the longside and knit accross the 11 stitches on the ohter end of the needle. Knitting in the round with one long circular needle instead of double points: Now you are now at the beginning of the round. Slide all the stitches on the right needle onto the cable while maintaining the loop between th the 2 sets of stitches. Now slide the other set of sticthes right from the cable onto the back of left needle. You now have 1/2 the stitches on the left needle, a loop of calble and then the other 1/2 of the stitches on the cable.

The right needle is empty. To knit in the round, knit stitches from the left needle to right needle until the left needle is empty. Repeat from *. P4 rounds K 1 round Change to Color A K 4 rounds Change to Color B K 1 round P4 rounds Change to Color A K to within one stitch from the end of a round. ssk Rearrange stitches by placing a needle cord loop to the space that is between the 7th & 8th stitch on the right end of the left needle and another loop another 30 stitches after that The 30 stitches form the back and the sides of the leg opening. The remaining stitches will form the instep. Turn the work and so that you are now working on the wrong side. SL1 P8 P2tog, turn to right side turn Sl 1 K8 SSK, turn to wrong side S1 P8 P2tog, turn to right side Work the last 2 rows until all the stitches on instep side of the loops have been worked in and 10 stitches remain on the instep side of the loops and 30 stitches along the back and sides of the leg. K 10 stitches. Lift yarn from the previous round onto the left needle and knit it together with the first stitch of the left needle. This prevents a hole from forming where the instep and base of the leg rounds join. Knit remaining 29 stitches on the needle. Lift yarn from the previous round onto the left needle and knit it together with the first stitch of the left needle, again to prevent a hole from forming on the other side of the of the instep. Knit remainder of the round (39 stitches). K another round. Form eyelets *k1 k2tog yo k2 repeat from * all the way around. K2 P2 all tthe way around. Repeat this ribbing row 2 times more. K 1 round Change to Color B and K 8 rounds and bind off loosely. Crochet a chain 12 inches long. Thread through the eyelets starting by going into one of the front eyelets and and ending by coming ou of the other front eyelet. Make 2 Pom Poms and attach to the end of the ties.t

I’m glad you posted this! I’m going to have to try knitting some myself.

Thanks again for the pair you knit for Stefan. :)
